On Saturday, August 2, 2014, many Toledo Area Residents woke up to a notification from several local officials warning us to not drink or boil the water. The days following the announcement, we waited to see when the microcystins in the drinking water would decline. It took 3 days for the water to return to safe drinking levels, but left many community members wondering if and when this crisis would happen again. Our guest speaker and Fellow Rotarian Andy Stuart, from the Rotary Club of Toledo, stopped by our weekly meeting to help educate us on the problems that caused the Toledo Water Crisis and provide us information regarding the upcoming Rotary Lake Erie Watershed Crisis Conference. Andy helped to outline several of factors that are causing algae issues in Lake Erie, including: Too much phosphorous from the fields, leaking septic systems, low performing wastewater treatment plants, the possible over-fertilization of our lawns and our water drainage system is being overwhelmed.
If you would like to take part in the conference and take action, go here to register.
This Week's Program (September 25, 2015) - Our guest speaker for the week is Jeff Bosch, Junior Achievement in Perrysburg Schools.
