Rotarians,
Once again, the generosity of Perrysburg Rotary has shined as bright as today’s sunshine. Last week we collected over $1,000 to purchase a Shelter Box for Earthquake victims in Nepal. Together with matching funds by an individual donor in the district, we’ve been able to make a $2,000 impact in an area with millions affected by loss. While the gift is modest, the ability to respond quickly and in a meaningful way is one of our greatest strengths as a club.
In other emergency news, through Jeff Normand were made aware of some security concerns with our partners in Romania, the Deborah House. The home has recently experienced some scary moments when a girl who was trafficked by her parents was abducted by her parents while walking to school. The girl has been found and the Deborah House staff members are currently working on getting her back into their safekeeping. Another incident occurred when someone showed up at the house and knocked, claiming to be a family member. It was just another attempt to abduct these girls who are already so very vulnerable to human trafficking.
In response, officials in Romania assessed the Deborah House and found their video surveillance and security to be inadequate. Perrysburg Rotary was able to meet that need very quickly with a grant request from our local foundation. While the immediate security concern was addressed with our donation, I know that Deborah House would welcome our continued thoughts and prayers around the safety of the girls.
At this week’s meeting we’ll hear about the history of the Rotary Club of Perrysburg from our own John Kurfess and Bob Domini. They have spent a great deal of time writing the early history of our club and are ready to share their hard work. If you’d like to come to Rotary about one hour before our meeting, Ken Robinson and the membership committee are putting on a member education session that will be beneficial for all members, no matter your tenure in the club.
